Earlier Wednesday major western news outlets like the BBC and the Guardian were reporting the “murder” of Russian journalist and prominent Putin critic Arkady Babchenko.
The implication was clear: Arkady Babchenko had been killed because of his anti-Kremlin views. After all he was an outspoken critic of the Russian establishment and Putin in particular. So Russia’s President would obviously like to see Babchenko silenced. Right?
Well not exactly because it now transpires that by his own admission Babchenko’s murder was staged. Media outlets had initially reported that the journalist had been found by his wife after being shot three times at his apartment on Tuesday.
He then reportedly “died” in the ambulance on the way to a hospital in Kiev.
However, earlier Wednesday Arkady Babchenko turned up alive in Ukraine’s capital. Met by gasps and cheers, the Russian dissident journalist appeared before a news conference that was to have been about his own death.
Vasily Gritsak, head of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), told reporters the agency faked Mr Babchenko’s death in order to catch those who are trying to kill him. Police said they had made one arrest in connection with the operation.
